Punarnava (पुनर्नवा) Introduction

Punarnava is a supernal medicinal plant. Punarnava has immense health benefits and it’s uses have been found in ancient Ayurveda literature. As per me, Punarnava consists of two words punar + nava which means again becoming new, combined meaning can be a herb that Rejuvenates. And as per Ayurveda Punarnava literally rejuvenates the whole body every part of the plant consists of several medicinal properties, useful for Kidney, heart, liver, stomach, skin bladder, arthritis, eyes, and more.

Punarnava has two types of red and white punarnava. Red punarnava also known as rakt punarnava is most commonly used as a medicine. Punarnava is a perennial plant that grows in the rainy season. it is found in almost all regions of India. Punarnava is 30-40 inches tall, branches are thin, round, and spread on the ground. stems are purple in color, at every edge there are two leaves with different sizes. Its flowers are very tiny in size, red or white in color. Its fruits are also tiny, about 1 cm, with stick seeds. the root is long, overall thin, with a bunch of sub-roots, secrets white liquid, and has a strong smell. Punarnava plant’s floral period is from August to January.

Punarnava Medicinal Benefits and Usage


  1. Punarnava Liver disorders: Punarnava is suggested in many Ayurveda literature for the liver to detoxify and revitalize the liver. improper working of the liver may lead you to jaundice like diseases punarnava helps to reset liver functioning. 

    • liver diseases: 10-20 ml punarnava juice with 2 gm of harad powder empty stomach, twice a day. helps in all liver problems and also in blood loss, spleen enlargement, abdominal worms.

    • Spleen Swelling: having 10-20 grams root paste swet(white) punarnava provides benefit in spleen enlargement.

  2. Punarnava for Urinary Tract Infections: Urinary Infections are very common in women. it can cause a lot of discomfort, and burning sensation during urination. Punarnava has such medicinal properties which clears out urinary infection in no time.

    • strangury: make a decoction of 8-10 fresh leaves of Punarnava with pinch of black pepper powder, strain and drink, provides relief in urination-sclerosis. alternatively, you can have milk with 1 spoon punarnava fresh leaf juice.

    • strangury: punarnava powder can be taken with luke water, it will reduce swelling, burning sensation and irritation while urination. 

  3. Arthritis: Punarnava helps to fight with arthritis pain and swelling. Punarnava suppresses Vata dosha and ama, Amavata is a state in which imbalances in Vata dosha and secrets of Aama (toxic due to improperly digested food) take place in the joints. Aama consists due to low digestive fire. Punarnava helps to correct digestive fire and reduce Ama which gives relief pain and swelling in the joints due to arthritis

    • Amavata: Having Decoction of Punarnava, harshringar with shunti powder(dry ginger powder), and natural camphor(bheemseni kapoor) for a week, digests ama and relieves in amavata.

    • Arthritis: 10-20ml of punarnava juice with the same amount of warm water empty stomach for a month, to get rid of the symptoms of Arthritis.

    • Arthritis: it is effective for external uses too. Take 10gm of Punarnava powder Make a paste with mustard oil and apply to the affected area. following this for a month reduces joint pain.

  4. Weight Loss: Punarnava is one of the most common herbs suggested for weight loss or to reduce excess fat for the body. Punarnava reduces aama and improves metabolism due it deepan, pachan properties, and presence of potent bioactive compounds. thus it prevents weight gain and reduces bad cholesterol.

    • Having 10-20ml punarnava juice with equal amounts of warm water before meals helps reduce weight and is a mild laxative prevents weight gain. 

  5. Punarnava for Abdomen: Punarnava is found beneficial in deteriorating stomach inflammation, ulcerative colitis, IBS(irritable bowel syndrome), and improves digestion.

    • Inflammation: Having Punarnava root with gomutra (Cow’s urine) helps you to get rid of all types of inflammation and abdominal diseases.

    • Ascites: Having a Decoction of Sonth (dry ginger), giloy, punarnava, devdaru(deodar), and choti harad, with gomutra(cow urine) relieves abdominal and inflammatory edema

    • IBS: Taking 20-30 ml of decoction made from Punarnava, sonth, choti harad, cheetrak(Ceylon leadwort), black pepper medicines is beneficial in duodenum and piles.

    • Laxative: Having root powder twice a day acts as a mild laxative, that improves bowel movement and digestion.

  6. Punarnava for Reproductive disease: 

    • for happy and natural delivery: Dip Punarnava root in oil, put it in the vagina for Delayed delivery, and difficult delivery. alternatively, its oil can be applied to the vagina.

    • Vaginal colic: Applying the Punarnava juice to the vagina causes the mitigation of vaginal pain and pain during pregnancy. alternatively, crushed leaves can be placed in the vagina.

  7. Punarnava for Poison Treatment:

    • Snakebite: This is the antidote of all types of snake venom. The juice taken from leaves is applied locally and taken orally for 7 days.

    • Scorpion-bite: crush punarnava leaves and apamarg, apply this paste to the sting of a scorpion, mitigates the biting effects.

  8. Punarnava for Eyes: applying fine paste of white Punarnava root made from ghee, found helpful to reduce eye diseases and improves eyesight.

  9. Punarnava as a Health tonic: Punarnava is a health tonic. Drinking 5-10 grams Punarnava powder with milk for the long term, increases the strength and nourishes the body.

Powder- 2-3 gm

punarnava capsule / tablet - 1-2 capsule twice a day
